Designed to provide the perfect combination of value, effectiveness, and comfort, the Schwinn 170 is often considered as one of the best upright exercise bikes on the market. With an extended variety of features conceived to draw optimal results from your training, this product is equipped with up to 29 different programs which can be adapted to the user’s own fitness level and overall stamina.

This upright bike is equipped with a heavy and solid flywheel featuring high inertia to enhance your workout effectiveness, and thanks to this nice feature you will also get a smooth and fluid training session that will help you burn more calories than usual. Indeed, the 170 is actually designed to increase your metabolism, which is your body’s fat-building rate, thus enabling you to lose weight throughout the day, even when not using the bike.

The best thing about the Schwinn 170 is that, although it’s a high-end upright bike, it is not as expensive as other models. In fact, for way under $500, you will get the same features and quality than with the extremely expensive Life Fitness Club Series upright bike.

Comfort and Ease of use

This upright bike has been designed with comfort in mind: with most other models, athletes often have to constantly fidget or even pause their training just to recover from the numerous aches and burns related to an uncomfortable seat, but, with this particular item, I found that I could very easily work out for over an hour without having to stop. In fact, the Schwinn 170 is equipped with a contoured seat which can comfortably accommodate athletes of various shapes and sizes.

Unlike other models, this particular product also features an ergonomically located cardio grip which allows your body to maintain a relaxed stance as you pedal away. Alternatively, people who would rather not use the cardio grip handles can also hold on to the fully adjustable handlebars. These are supported by forearm rests to maximize comfort.

Users who like to workout to rhythmic music will be glad to learn that this exercise bike is equipped with a pair of sealed acoustic chamber speakers that will provide high-quality sound for the entire duration of your training. As a great addition, the Schwinn 170 comes with a powerful fan that will keep you cool even in the hottest of summer, and unlike other models, this fan actually works as it is powered by the bike’s plug-in feature.

The 170 is mainly known for its heavy flywheel which provides a completely sleek and smooth workout. At the same time, this model is very quiet; free from the usual whirring that usually accompanies poorer-quality upright bikes.

The upright bike comes with an amazing array of built-in programs that will certainly keep entertained even the most exigent of users. Now while that is a cool feature, if you’d rather customize your own workout, this can also be easily done in this model. And for those interested in keeping track of their heart rate, the 170 also includes 4 heart rate control programs to help you build endurance and strengthen your heart and lungs.

With its 25 levels of Eddy Current Brake Resistance, this exercise bike will accommodate both novice and advanced users. The beginner users will be able to start on a low difficulty and adjust the resistance as they build strength, while the advanced users will certainly find the higher levels quite challenging, even if they’re used to extensive outdoors cycling.

This model also comes with a dual track LCD monitor which provides no less than 13 fitness-related information including goal achievement, intensity meter, user indicator, complete indicator, heart rate zone indicator, course profile, resistance level, calories, pulse, speed, distance, time and RPM. The monitor is backlit, which makes it easy for the user to view from a distance without having to repeatedly pause their training. You will also be able to create your personal fitness profile through the monitor: in fact, this upright bike can store up to 4 different user profiles which makes it perfect for homes where more than one person is going to use the bike.

The console comes with a USB charging port for easily exporting data to Schwinn Connect, and what is even better, you can upload your data to myfitnesspal.com! Now, this is definitely an improvement from other models!

Assembly and Parts

This product is fairly easy to assemble and comes with all the required screws, knobs and tools. The boxed packaging also includes an illustrated manual which can come in very handy to users who aren’t used to assembling fitness equipment. While the manual claims that this product can be assembled in half an hour, I personally took a little longer and was only able to put it together after forty-five minutes to an hour.

Drawbacks

A few customers were not happy about the fact that the manual only contained diagrams instead of actual instructions. While most individuals did find the diagrams easy to follow, some users claimed the lack of wording made the assembly process quite difficult and lengthy for them. One user also complained of lower back pain after his workout but this can also be related to poor posture during training.

Still, in spite of these few downsides, it remains an extremely professional and club-quality piece of fitness equipment that for such an affordable price is definitely a great investment.

While it has not been built for heavy-duty use, the machine does feature an extremely stable and dense base which does not budge at all, even during more intensive training sessions. With proper care and maintenance, the upright bike can very easily last for several years, if not decades. Most importantly, this is one of the most comfortable and easy to use machines on the market and will undoubtedly encourage users to push past their regular boundaries to burn more calorie.

Upright exercise bike review
