  • Mar 02, 2017  Try Jam Monster (you won't regret it): Today we look at the Eleaf iStick QC200W internal battery mod. The iStick QC200 from eleaf is the latest in the iStick series.

Eleaf iStick QC 200W TC Starter Kit

The Eleaf iStick QC 200W TC Starter Kit$59.99 at Vapor Authority, has been in the marketplace for several weeks already. At first glance, this was an impressive box mod and sub-ohm tank, and it didn’t feel like we would need more than a week to ten days before a review could be written. Then, we began to consider the 5000mAh internal battery and how it would figure in with performance, and most importantly, battery life between charges.

After two months of use and an extra pack of replacement coils for the tank, we’re now ready to offer up our assessment of the Eleaf QC with the MELO 300 Sub-Ohm tank. By the way, in early March we reviewed the MELO 300 and found it to be an A+ sub-ohm.

About the Eleaf QC TC Box Mod & MELO 300

The Eleaf ‘iStick’ QC 200W Melo 300 Starter Kit can be a powerful combination for advanced, intermediate, and even new Vapers looking for their first chance for some Cloud Chasing. While the MELO 300 is considered an excellent accompaniment to the Eleaf QC, new Vapers might want to keep in mind that the QC can be purchased without the MELO 300 since the box mod itself can power just about any atomizer on the market.

If new Vapers, or simply fans of other sub-ohm tanks, would rather forego the MELO 300 experience, the mod itself is available as a standalone box mod.

That 5000mAh Internal Battery

The Eleaf iStick QC 200W Box Mod is equipped with a new tri-cell integrated internal battery. 5,000 mAh capacity should provide several hours of moderate vaping before needing a recharge, and in some situations that is certainly true. In other situations, not so much. But I’ll get to that.

The Eleaf iStick QC’s 5000mAh built-in battery has a powerful 50A maximum output, as well as the 200W of output. The Eleaf iStick QC 200W also features a fast 1.5A quick-charge capability. Unfortunately, to get that 1.5A charging ability you’ll need to use a charge system that can get you there. Eleaf, Joyetech, and WISMEC has adopted the technology of the Avatar Quick Charger and are offering these chargers as standalone battery chargers and as a ‘wall plugin’ for the included USB cable that can match the 1.5A charge for internal batteries.

Eleaf QC and Reverse Charge

Also like WISMEC and Joyetech, Eleaf has begun offering Reverse Charge technology for their mods. Reverse Charge means that with an adapter that screws into the 510-connector the user can power other electronic devices, or recharge these same devices. Spinfuel VAPE is convinced that this technology would be helpful when used with a device like the four-cell WISMEC Reuleaux RX300, we’re just not sure how helpful it would be with dual 18650 devices or internal batteries like the ones used in the Eleaf QC. I suppose in a pinch, if the user needs access to a cell phone that had depleted its battery then yea, it makes sense. The Reverse Charge Adapter is also made by Avatar, pricing varies.

The usual suspects found in all modern mods, low-voltage protection, over-charge protection, and so on are found in the Eleaf QC, as well as the Eleaf, WISMEC, and Joyetech features like Dual Circuit Protection & Reverse Polarity Protection. Reverse polarity protection is achieved by using a special battery anti-reverse circuit in the devices circuit board. The dual circuit protection system helps make the Eleaf QC safer and more reliable.

The Eleaf Melo 300 Tank

The Eleaf iStick QC 200W Starter Kit includes the Melo 300 Tank. I know many advanced, or experienced Vapers that have adopted the MELO 300 as their everyday Sub-Ohm tank. We gave it the maximum score in our review back in early March. It is, truly, a spectacular sub-ohm tank. However, for myself, it isn’t my everyday tank.

The Eleaf Melo 300 Sub-Ohm Tank is the most powerful version of the MELO tank series. Built with a high-performance chassis and capable of firing up to 300W using the ES Sextuple Coil Structure, this tank is one mean machine.

The Melo 300 measures 26mm in diameter and uses a very cool retractable and sliding top-fill method. Of all the ways tank manufacturers have been playing with various top-fill methods, this retractable/sliding top fill is my favorite, surpassing the hinge-door method found in my favorite sub-ohm tanks, the SMOK TFV8/TFV12 series. Retracting the top cap reveals a fill slot that has plenty of room for even the dumbest eliquid bottle drippers and unicorn tips. (Ever try to fill a TFV8/TFV12 tank with a bottle of Crispy Treats by Ethos? Frustrating!)

The Melo 300 is available as a 3.5mL or a 6.5mL capacity tank. The core of the tank uses the ES Sextuple Coil Structure developed by Eleaf. The ES Sextuple has a triple coil design with parallel vertical coils for a wattage range of 100W to 300W. While I’ve not yet broached that 300W limit, I have had it past 200W for a short time. When vaping a High or MAX VG eliquid the 6.5mL tank will come in handy.

The Airflow on the MELO 300 enters the tank through a pair of vast airflow slots located at the base of the tank. These airflow slots measure 13mm by 3mm for maximum airflow and to provide added cooling properties when vaping at high wattage.

The MELO 300 was built to compete against all the modern high performance Sub-Ohm Tank tanks in the market, and in some ways, it surpasses every tank I’ve vaped with. However, that’s the not the reason I do not use the MELO 300 every day. The MELO 300 and the 0.17Ω ES Sextuple coils have one problem that I find a little too annoying; the 1-2 second delay in vapor production.

I’ve used the MELO 300 on the new WISMEC Predator, the SMOK GX350, and several more, and each time there is this delay between pressing the fire button and inhaling the magnificent flavorful vapor that the MELO 300 excels at. I’ve ran the test many times between the MELO 300 and the SMOK TFV12 Cloud Beast King and the results are always the same. As soon as I press the fire button of the SMOK GX350 or the Eleaf QC, or any other mod, the vapor production begins instantly. Using the same mods at the same wattage settings, the MELO 300 takes a seemingly long time to get where the TFV12 is instantly. Well, why not let the video show you what I mean.

Designed to deliver truly intense flavor and thick, rich clouds of vapor, the MELO 300 is a true performer. Available in black and stainless steel, depending on the which kit you choose or as a standalone tank purchase, the Melo 300 complements the aesthetics of any box mod you choose.

If you are in search of an aesthetically beautiful, well-performing, and solidly-build vaping setup, the Eleaf iStick QC 200W Melo 300 Starter Kit is a great choice.

Bottom Line

I like everything about the Eleaf QC Starter Kit except the 5000mAh internal battery. The SMOK Alien 220W Box Mod can output 220W with dual 18650’s, so the QC could as well, and that’s the direction I think they should have gone. But who knows, the way WISMEC, Joyetech and Eleaf can whip up a new version (witness, eVic Primo and eVic Primo 2 in a matter of 3 months), perhaps it won’t be long before we see a dual battery version of the QC. One can hope.

Pick your Eleaf iStick QC Starter Kit up today at Vapor Authority for just $59.99.

“While Spinfuel VAPE gives the MELO 300 an A+, combined with the 200W QC and its internal battery, we feel that, for the money and performance, this Starter Kit is a solid B+”

Eleaf iStick QC86100

Just right off the top, I would recommend getting this mod in the wood grain option; a beautiful-looking product. This mod has over six different color options, but the wood grain goes well with the rest of the device regarding stylishness and appearance.

Ok, so enough of my superficial traits. The Eleaf iStick QC is a slim, minimalistic box mod (although “box” isn’t the best way to describe its shape) that features a 200W output and a not so over-burdened design. There is no OLED screen or another touchscreen on this mod; it has a simple digital readout that tells you the temperature, wattage and coil resistance.

The iStick QC contends that it is a 5000 mAh device, although I don’t believe that to be true. I think there is a three-cell lithium-ion pack inside, but the batteries run in a series, not parallel.

Batteries that are in a series means the cells sit at opposite polarities, with one cell sitting one way and the next battery sitting oppositely, so it forms a chain of power. If the cells were two parallel 18650 batteries, I could see the mod having a 5000mAh rating, but as it is, if you divide 5000 by three then the mAh is closer to 1600mAh.

The kit also comes with the recently released Melo 300 tank with ES 0.17 ohm kanthal coils that features six different coil rods. The tank has a proprietary drip tip from Eleaf so it’ll be hard to swap it out for something else.

In your Eleaf iStick QC 200W kit, you will receive the following:

  • One Eleaf iStick QC 200W mod
  • One Eleaf Melo 300 tank
  • One Eleaf 0.17ohm coil
  • One Eleaf 0.17ohm coil replacement
  • One QC USB charging cable
  • One set of spare parts

Just like its predecessor, the iKuu 200W, the iStick QC is surprisingly lightweight, due to its mix of plastic and stainless steel parts. But because of its stainless steel components, the iStick is much more durable.

I liked that the screen on the iStick QC doesn’t ultimately take over the screen like with some other mods. It has a simple purpose and is not meant to the main feature of the device; the main feature, of course, would be how well it vapes.

With that said, the screen is quite small, and in the wrong light, would probably be impossible to see. On either side of the screen, you have the firing button and the selector buttons, which are plastic and harken back to the days of clicky firing buttons on mods.

There are some venting holes on the bottom of the mod to let your batteries cool off when they need too. The USB charging port is also on the bottom of the mod. I was never a fan of charging ports located on the bottom, since I don’t like lying my devices down to charge, especially with a tank attached.

The 510 connectors are well-threaded, spring-loaded and are made of stainless steel. The 510 connector can accommodate 25mm tanks, and there was minimal overhang when I did slap a Big Baby tank on there. And that’s the setup of the mod.

The Melo 300 tank can vape at 300W, obviously, but I don’t understand why you would include a tank that can take that amount of power with a mod that can only push 200W. And 300W? Who vapes at 300W? I mean, we’re only making vapor, we’re not splitting the atom here.

But besides those flaws, I liked the design and machining of the coils. There are six coil rods with kanthal wire wrapped around them, and if you prime them before using the device, you are sure to get both great flavor and vapor production.

The iStick QC has a user interface very similar to a lot of other Chinese manufacturers, like SMOKTech and Wismec. Pushing the firing button five times activates the device and turns it off as well. Three clicks of the firing button let you switch between the three different modes.

The three different temperature control modes range from nickel to stainless steel, and let’s not forget the titanium option. There are three different memory settings.

There is also a smart mode on the iStick that can recognize up to ten different coil types and memorizes them. So whenever you re-attach the same coil type (stainless steel, 0.5-ohm coil, for example, that you vape at 80W), the smart mode will automatically set it back to 80W.

That’s just one of the just-enough features that you get with the mod. It isn’t completely overloaded with too many variable settings or features, which was something that I appreciated. The mod also lets you decide what gets displayed on the screen.

You can choose a simple wattage and coil resistance reading to a more thorough readout with the wattage, battery life and puff counter all displayed.

It was difficult to decide what was really the attraction of this entire kit: the mod or the tank? The Melo 300 tank is a beast of a tank with its massive size and generous output of nearly 300W.

200w

The Melo opens up by sliding the mouthpiece back to reveal the fill ports on the tank. There are two airflow valves on the bottom of the tank and all that put together made the Melo a great performer.

The iStick has a basic setup, but with the various wattage and temperature controls, you can truly fine-tune your vape. The Melo 300 tank has a minimum wattage level of 100W, so there is no point to vaping anywhere under 100W. If you do vape under 100W, then you won’t realize the potential of this tank.

Eleaf Istick Qc 200w User Manual Instructions

I set my wattage level well-above the minimum 100W at 130W, and I used the pre-installed 0.17ohm coil. All this combined with the e-juice I was using, a 70/30 VG/PG mix from Mr. Good Vape called Moon Sugar, and I was all set to get my vape on.

I was blowing cloud monsters all over the place with the iStick. I kept mostly to the variable wattage mode since I’m not a huge fan of temperature control and I don’t push the envelope when it comes to that side of vaping.

There wasn’t much difficulty in finding a comparable device for the iStick. I automatically thought of the Halo Reactor that also features a 5000 mAh battery and has a nearly identical mod design and setup as the iStick.

Eleaf Istick Qc 200w

The display screen and button layout are nearly the same as well. And, if that wasn’t enough, the Halo Reactor also has a smart mode that has ten different memory settings. So there isn’t much to distinguish the two mods.

It is only those finer details that make a difference. The Halo Reactor atomizer has stainless steel coils, compared to the kanthal wire coils on the Melo 300. And the Halo Reactor can only reach a maximum output of 80W, compared to the 200W capability of the iStick. So for its sheer power and performance, I think that the Melo 300 tank alone can put the iStick kit above the Halo Reactor.

Looks

I thought the iStick looked great; it was the first thing I mentioned in this review. I was immediately drawn in by the wood grain look, but the rest of the six different color schemes work well with the rest of the mod as well.

Tank

The Melo 300 is a winner through and through. The airflow, the kanthal coils, and the retractable drip tip make it an easy-to-use, cloud-maker that is easy to disassemble and maintain.

Smart Mode

I liked the fact that the iStick could be programmed with ten different memory settings. It made the possibility of using different atomizers and coil heads all that much easier.

Screen

Although I’m a big fan of more back-to-basics mods, the screen on the iStick was rather small, and it made getting an accurate read on things a little confusing.

Lack of parts

Despite the greatness of the Melo 300 tank, I would have appreciated some more replacement parts, like an extra glass tube or another drip tip.

The iStick is a great-looking device. At its price point of near $70, it is perfect for vapers looking to have a satisfying sub-ohm vaping experience without breaking the bank.

But, as much as I liked the iStick, the Melo 300 was an impressive device in and of itself. The sub-ohm, kanthal coils were excellent cloud-makers without sacrificing too much in the flavor department. And with the minimum wattage on the Melo 300 being 100W, it became necessary to push the mod to its limits and extract every single droplet of flavor that I could.

I give the Eleaf iStick 200W a thoroughly impressed 8/10.
