This is my TP Link Smart Plug Mini Review and Setup guide. I picked up the TP Link Smart Plug Mini 2-pack (HS105 Kit) a couple days ago and I really enjoy using them! In this article I’m going to walk you through my review as well as the unboxing and setup of the wifi smart plugs!

The mini smart plugs are designed to fit two to an outlet (as shown below) and they don’t require a hub for wi-fi control! Additionally, use voice control with Alexa enabled device like an Echo, Echo Dot or ecobee4! Also, the smart plugs work with Google Home / Google Assistant.

How To Setup Your TP Link Smart Plug Minis

Plug

If you consult the side of the Smart Plug box, you will find there are 3 steps in the setup process…

Tp-link Hs105 Kit Mini Wifi Smart Plug User Manual

Step 1. Download the TP-Link Kasa app

Step 2. Plug the Smart Wi-Fi Plug Mini into any outlet

Step 3. Configure Smart Wi-Fi Plug Mini preferences on the Kasa app.

Let’s just run through this one step at a time.

Kankun Wifi Smart Plug

Step 1. Download the TP-Link Kasa App

The Kasa app gives you control of your TP-Link devices via wifi (TP-Link has a ton of different smart home devices).

You download the Kasa app onto your Android or iOS device the same way you download any other app: via Google Play or the App Store.

Simply open your respective store and type in Kasa and tap search. Kasa for Mobile app should appear.

Once you’ve downloaded and installed the Kasa app, open it. At the home screen you will be asked to log in to a Kasa account. If you don’t have one (I did not) click “Create Account” in the bottom left hand corner.

Setting up your Kasa profile takes all of about 12 seconds. It only asks for an email address and a password to get started.

Once you sign up, they are going to ask you to verify your email. THIS IS IMPORTANT!

Well, sort of. It depends how much control you want over your smart plugs. To get full control, untethered by location and geography, you need to verify your email. Otherwise, you will only be able to control your plugs when you are on the same local wi-fi as them.

After you confirm your email you’ll get a short congratulations in teeny tiny print and you’ll be ready to move forward with the setup.

The app will ask your permission to allow location, you’ll probably select allow.

Add Devices in Your Kasa App

At this point you’ll see a screen, prompting you to add devices. It will look like this

Just tap the plus sign in the top right hand corner to get started adding your TP-Link devices to your Kasa app.

For our purposes, we’ll be selecting the Smart Plug Mini icon.

Now it’s time to plug in your Smart Plug Mini!

Step 2. Plug in Your Smart Plug Mini

You should see an orange light in the corner of the smart plug mini. If you don’t see the orange light (Kasa app calls it amber), it probably doesn’t have the power turned on and you’ll just want to press the power button. Tap next on your Kasa app.

Your orange light will begin to flash blue after about 10 seconds. This means it’s searching for wi-fi. Hit next on your phone and your phone will connect to the device.

Once your phone connects to the device, you can give the smart plug mini a name and an icon to represent what device will be plugged into the smart plug. I chose the name lamp and a lamp icon.

At this time you’ll want to connect the smart plug mini to your wi-fi by selecting your network and typing in your password.

Your smart plug mini is all setup to be controlled by the Kasa app! Just plug in your device and test it out!

So the package I bought came with TWO smart plugs. To setup the second device, just click the plus sign in the top right hand corner of the Kasa home screen again and repeat the preceding steps.

Setting Scenes With The Kasa App

Once you have more than one device connected. You may want to control more than one device at a time. That’s where Kasa Scenes come in.

Scenes will be a tab option on the home screen of the kasa app. I set up a custom scene for this demonstration. It’s really simple.

Once you have clicked a scene you wish to setup, just select the devices you want and the behavior you want them to perform. That is, turn on or off when the scene is activated…

So when a behavior is set for a scene, it can’t be reversed. That is, if my scene tells my devices to turn ON, I can’t tap it again to turn them OFF. This was kind of a bummer but it has a purpose.

If my scene requires some devices to turn on and some devices to turn off, I wouldn’t want to tap the scene again for the opposite effect; some devices going on and some going off.

Next, pick an icon for your Kasa scene.

After you select an icon, just name the scene and you can control it from your Kasa app! If you want to turn all your devices on or off, you’ll want to create two scenes. An on scene, and an off scene.

Are Smart Plugs Worth It?

The answer to this question will vary depending who you ask and their available alternatives.

Smart Plugs are really useful for:

People Who Rent Or Live In An Apartment

I really like the TP-Link Smart Plug Minis. I demonstrated their use to a friend, and commanded Alexa to turn my smart plugs on and off. The living room lamps all shut off at my command. His response?

“I wouldn’t buy those. I would just get the smart outlets (like these).”

Well, for folks who don’t want to pull outlets out of their rental or rewire an apartment, the smart plugs offer a fantastic, and subtle, and cost-effective alternative.

People Who Aren’t Great With Technology

Setting up my TP-Link smart plugs took about 10 minutes. All I needed was a wi-fi connection and a smart phone. Of course a wall outlet and a lamp, too, but duh.

For people who don’t know much about technology, don’t have Z-wave devices, and aren’t very handy, TP-Link Smart Plugs are insanely simple to set up and use!

Elderly and Handicapped

Honestly, I think every retirement community and aging grandparent living on their own should have a smart home.

My granny had bad knees (luckily science, and a ton of money, gave her new ones) and she had trouble getting up and walking around. So menial tasks like turning things on and off around her house could be a pain. Like a literal, real, pain.

Having a device like TP-Link Smart Plugs would have helped her out big time when it came to turning various lamps, stereos, and other electronics on and off around her home. This goes for pretty much EVERY smart home device on the market.

Troubleshooting TP-Link Smart Plugs

Setting up the TP Link Smart Plug Minis is pretty straightforward. However, if you are having trouble with your devices for any reason, just visit TP-Link’s contact us page for different ways to reach them.

You’ll also note that TP-Link Smart Plug Minis do come with a 2 year warranty.
